Surrey Hills Home Cinema website

Surrey Hills Home Cinema is a company that has been in the business of creating bespoke cinema rooms for over 15 years. With their expertise and dedication to providing the ultimate cinema experience, they have built a strong reputation in the industry. However, they realised that in order to reach a wider audience and showcase their unique services, they needed a strong online presence. That’s when they approached us to design and build a new WordPress website for them.

From the initial consultation, it was clear that Surrey Hills Home Cinema had a clear vision of what they wanted their website to achieve. They wanted a platform that would not only showcase their various projects but also educate potential clients on the process of building a home cinema. They also wanted the website to reflect their brand image of luxury, elegance, and attention to detail.

To achieve this, our team worked closely with the Surrey Hills Home Cinema team to understand their brand and their target audience. We conducted extensive research on the home cinema industry and analysed the websites of their competitors to identify areas where we could improve and stand out.

The design process began with creating a modern and visually appealing layout that would capture the attention of visitors. We incorporated high-quality images of their previous projects and used a monochrome palette to let the imagery provide the impact. The website also featured a user-friendly interface with easy navigation, making it easy for potential clients to browse through different sections and gather information.

However, the focus of the website was not only on aesthetics but also on functionality. An informative breakdown of their services, from the type of furniture, fabrics, lighting, and carpets to the screens, projectors, speakers and controllers they use to create the ultimate cinema experience was outlined. We also included a portfolio section to showcase their previous projects that provides a gallery and detailed specification of the installation.

Working with Surrey Hills Home Cinema was a collaborative and exciting experience for our team. We were able to bring their vision to life and create a website that not only showcases their services but also educates and engages potential clients. The new website has received positive feedback from both their team and clients, and we are proud to have played a part in their continued success in the home cinema industry.

When Axis Commercial Finance approached us to help develop their brand and create their website, we were excited to take on the challenge. As a financial company, they wanted to establish a strong online presence, but they were lacking in content and were unsure of how to effectively present their services and values to potential clients. We understood the importance of a strong brand and website in the competitive financial industry and we were determined to help them stand out.

Our first step was to conduct thorough research on the company, their target audience and their competitors. This helped us gain a deep understanding of their brand and what sets them apart from others in the market. We then worked closely with the team at Axis Commercial Finance to define their brand identity, including their mission, vision, and values. This helped us create a cohesive and consistent brand image that would resonate with their target audience.

Next, we focused on creating the website. However, due to the limited content available, we decided to take the approach of building a single-page site. This meant that all the necessary information would be presented on one page, with the menu items scrolling to different sections within the page. This not only allowed us to effectively showcase their services, but it also made for a more user-friendly experience for visitors.

After a few rounds of revisions and fine-tuning, the website was complete. The final result was a sleek, modern, and user-friendly site that effectively showcased their brand and services. We are confident that this website will serve as a valuable tool for Axis Commercial Finance to connect with their audience and grow their business.

My Advice Gateway website

My Advice Gateway is a vital platform for individuals who are seeking guidance and support in claiming benefits, finding job opportunities, and accessing helpful resources. However, the previous website for this organisation was outdated and not user-friendly, which made it difficult for users to navigate and access the information they needed. We were approached by My Advice Gateway to create a new website that would better serve their users and fulfil their mission of providing easy access to important resources.

The first step in this project was to understand their needs and goals. We conducted thorough research on the organisation, its target audience, and the services it offers. This helped us gain a better understanding of their vision and what they wanted to achieve with their new website. We also analysed their previous website and identified the areas that needed improvement.

After gathering all the necessary information, we proposed a solution that would best suit their requirements. We suggested rebuilding the website using the WordPress platform. WordPress is a popular and user-friendly content management system that would make it easier for them to manage their website and update content regularly.

Our team worked closely with My Advice Gateway to design a website that was visually appealing, easy to navigate and aligned with their brand image. We incorporated a clean and modern design with intuitive navigation to ensure that users could easily find the information they needed. We also made sure the website was accessible and responsive, meaning it would function seamlessly on all devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

Throughout the development process, we provided regular updates and implemented their feedback. We also provided training to their team on how to manage the website and update content.

The new website was launched successfully, and the organisation saw an increase in traffic and engagement from users. The user-friendly interface and optimised content made it easier for individuals to find the help and support they needed and was able to fulfil its mission of providing a free resource for those in need.

In conclusion, our partnership with My Advice Gateway was a successful one, and we are proud to have helped them create a new website that better serves their users. We are confident that with this new platform, My Advice Gateway will continue to make a positive impact on individuals seeking guidance and support in claiming benefits, finding job opportunities and accessing helpful resources.

WEC Nuclear Scenarios Report

WEC Nuclear Scenarios Report

When the World Energy Council approached us to design their Nuclear Scenarios report, we were very pleased for the opportunity. Up to now we had only been supplying printing services, but for this project, we were tasked with creating the entire report and summary document. This was an exciting challenge for us, as it allowed us to showcase our skills and work closely with the WEC to bring their vision to life.

The first step in the design process was familiarising ourselves with the World Energy Council’s brand guidelines. As a reputable and well-established organisation, it was crucial for us to adhere to their branding in order to maintain consistency and credibility.

The report was a comprehensive 66 pages, filled with data, charts and graphs. Our team of designers worked closely with the WEC to organise the information in a visually appealing and easy-to-understand format. Infographics and visually striking charts to make the information more engaging and digestible for the readers.

The summary document, on the other hand, was a condensed version of the report, consisting of only 4 pages. Our challenge was to convey the key points and findings of the report in a concise and impactful manner.

Throughout the design process, we collaborated closely with the World Energy Council to ensure that the final product met their expectations and accurately represented their research and findings.

In the end, we were immensely proud of the final result. The Nuclear Scenarios report and summary document were not only visually appealing but also effectively communicated the WEC’s insights and recommendations. It was an honour to be a part of this project and we look forward to future collaborations.

Play on the Pitch

Good Impressions was tasked with creating the brand and website for ProPlay Sport Events and its suite of event based products. The ProPlay Sport Events brand is dedicated to providing unique and memorable sporting experiences for children, adults, and companies. Their suite of products consist of Play on the Pitch, PropPlay 5 a-side, ProPlay Cricket, Paris International Cup and ProPlay Rugby.

The premier product of ProPlay Sport Events is Play on the Pitch, which gives individuals and companies the opportunity to play at Premier League and Football League stadiums. Good Impressions was responsible for creating the entire brand identity for Play on the Pitch, including the logo, colour scheme, and visual elements. We wanted the brand to evoke a sense of excitement and exclusivity, while also showcasing the professional and high-quality experience that ProPlay Sport Events provides.

In addition to the brand identity, we also designed and developed the Play on the Pitch website. The website was built on the WordPress platform and utilised Woocommerce for its e-commerce functionality. Our goal was to create a user-friendly and visually appealing website that would showcase the various events and allow teams to easily book their spot. We included a detailed description of each event, along with pricing, dates, and availability. The website also features stunning images of the stadiums where the events take place, further highlighting the unique and prestigious nature of Play on the Pitch.

To add to the overall experience, we also designed and printed personalised certificates for each participant, as well as an event programme. These elements not only added to the professional and polished look of the events but also served as keepsakes for the participants to remember their experience.

In conclusion, Good Impressions was honoured to be a part of creating the brand and website for ProPlay Sport Events and its suite of products. The success of Play on the Pitch and the positive feedback from customers is a testament to the hard work and dedication that went into creating a strong and cohesive brand identity and a user-friendly website. We are confident that the other ProPlay Sport Events products will also be a hit with their target audience and we look forward to collaborating with them on future projects.

Locata Brand Refresh and Website

Locata Brand Refresh and Website

For the past two decades, our team at Good Impressions has had the pleasure of working with Locata Housing Services, the leading provider of social housing and homelessness software in the UK. As their long-standing supplier, we have been involved in various projects and campaigns to help promote their brand and products. However, with the ever-changing landscape of technology and design, it was time for a refresh.

One of the main requirements for the brand refresh was to create a design that reflected the modular nature of their software offering. Locata Housing Services provides a range of software solutions that can be used as standalone products or combined to create a full-service solution. Therefore, it was important for the brand to convey flexibility and versatility, while still maintaining a professional and trustworthy image.

To achieve this, we focused on creating a clean and modern design that incorporated a modular layout. This allowed for easy navigation and highlighted the different software solutions offered. We also incorporated a new palette of secondary colours that are eye-catching and add a dynamic and energetic touch.

In addition to the brand refresh, we were also tasked with designing and building a new website. The website needed to showcase why they are the UK’s leading supplier of social housing and homelessness software, their product range, and their market share. We worked closely with the team at Locata to understand their goals and target audience, and then created a website that not only looked visually appealing but also effectively conveyed their key messages.

The website features a user-friendly interface, with clear navigation and concise content that highlights the benefits of Locata’s software solutions. We also incorporated testimonials from satisfied clients to demonstrate the success of their products. The corporate logo was also updated to be used only in black or white, further emphasising the sleek and modern look of the brand.

Overall, the brand refresh and website design for Locata Housing Services was a successful collaboration between us and their team. The new brand and website effectively convey the company’s professionalism, reliability, and market-leading status. We are proud to have been a part of this project and look forward to continuing our partnership with Locata in the future.

Mandar Solutions is a company that specialises in providing innovative and cutting-edge monitoring solutions for various industries. When they approached us to help them create their brand and design and build their new website, we were excited to work with such a dynamic and forward-thinking company. Intrigued by their business, we were eager to take on this project and help bring their vision to life. From the initial meetings with their team, we knew that this was going to be a unique and exciting project.

During the design phase, we worked closely with the Mandar Solutions team to ensure that their brand and website accurately reflected their company values and mission. We wanted to create a modern and innovative look that would appeal to their target audience and stand out in their industry.

One of the key elements developed for their logo was the green section. This not only added a pop of colour to the design, but it also represented the green light found on most hardware, indicating that the device is on and working as expected.

When it came to building the website, we wanted to create a user-friendly and visually appealing experience for their customers. One of the standout features of the website is the interactive illustration that visually shows how their system monitors, alerts and responds to changes in equipped areas. This was a clever way to showcase the unique capabilities of their system and give potential customers a better understanding of how it could be deployed.

Throughout the entire process, we worked closely with the Mandar Solutions team to ensure that their brand and website accurately represented their values and mission. We also provided them with training and support on how to manage and update their website, giving them control and flexibility to make changes as their business grows.

Swarme recruitment website

We were delighted to have the opportunity to work with Swarme, a revolutionary recruitment company that has taken a unique marketplace approach to connecting workers with employers. From the very beginning, we were impressed by their vision and passion for creating a more efficient and transparent way of hiring and finding work. Our team was eager to help bring their ideas to life and create a user-friendly website that would complement and promote their cross-platform app.

One of the first steps in the design process was to fully understand Swarme’s business model and target audience. We worked closely with their team to gain a deep understanding of their marketplace approach and how it differs from traditional recruitment methods. This helped us to identify key features and functionalities that would be essential for their website, such as a direct entry point for both workers and employers, a job board and worker profiles.

Another important aspect of the project was ensuring that the website was fully responsive and optimised for all devices. With Swarme’s target audience consisting of both workers and employers who may be on-the-go, it was crucial that the website was easily accessible and functional on mobile devices. ICC T20 World Cup 2020 ticket website

ICC T20 World Cup 2020 ticket website

We were pleased to receive the project of designing a ticketing website for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia. The task at hand was no small feat, as the website needed to not only represent the prestigious International Cricket Council (ICC) but also incorporate the branding of T20, a fast-paced and exciting form of the game. Our goal was to create a visually appealing and user-friendly website that would serve as the go-to platform for fans to purchase tickets for the highly anticipated tournament.

We began by conducting thorough research on both the ICC and T20 branding guidelines to ensure that our design would accurately reflect their identities. We also took into consideration the target audience, which would primarily consist of cricket enthusiasts from all over the world. This meant that the website needed to be accessible and easy to navigate for both local and international users.

The key pages of the website included the dashboard, ticket ordering, swaps and returns pages. For the dashboard, we wanted to create a dynamic and vibrant design that would immediately capture the attention of visitors. We incorporated elements from both the ICC and T20 branding to establish a cohesive look. The ticket ordering page was designed to be functional and informative, with a clean layout that displayed all the important match information and package options available.

We opted to develop the design using WordPress as this allowed us to quickly build responsive pages and templates that could easily be relocated to the bespoke CMS and eCommerce system that would manage the operation.

The end result was a visually stunning and functional website that served as the primary platform for fans to purchase tickets for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia.

Team GB Live Tokyo 2020 website

Team GB Live Tokyo 2020 ticketing website

Team GB Live Tokyo 2020 ticketing website

We were thrilled and honoured to have been given the opportunity to design the Team GB Live Tokyo 2020 Olympics ticketing website. As a team of experienced web designers and developers, we were excited to take on the challenge of creating a website that would not only showcase the Olympics but also provide a seamless and user-friendly ticket purchasing experience for fans.

Our first step was to thoroughly understand the brand guidelines of Team GB. This was crucial in ensuring that the website accurately reflected the values and identity of the team. We carefully studied the colors, fonts, and overall aesthetic of the brand to incorporate them into our design. We wanted the website to not only be functional but also visually appealing and representative of the Olympic spirit.

Using WordPress as our primary platform, we began creating key pages and templates that would be essential for the website. These included the homepage, event pages, ticket purchasing pages, and information pages. Each page was designed with a mobile-first approach, ensuring that the website would be fully responsive and accessible on all devices. Various features were integrated such as a countdown timer to build anticipation for the games and a map to help users navigate the different venues.

After completing the designs, they were seamlessly integrated into a bespoke CMS and eCommerce system. This allowed the introduction of specific functionality, easy management of content and ticket sales, making the process efficient for both the team and the users. Various security measures were incorporated to ensure a safe and secure online ticket purchasing experience.

However, just as we were nearing the launch of the website, the unfortunate news of the Olympic Games being delayed by a year due to the pandemic was announced. This meant that the website would not be used as the games ended up being held behind closed doors. While we were very disappointed, prioritising public health and safety was paramount.

Nevertheless, we were proud of the website we had designed and the opportunity to be a part of such a prestigious event.

Tokyo 2020 hospitality website

Tokyo 2020 hospitality website

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games were highly anticipated events that were set to be held in Japan. Working with STH, the official hospitality partner for the games, our team was tasked with creating a multilingual hospitality website adhering to strict brand guidelines, that would cater to the needs of both local and international visitors.

The project began with extensive research on the cultural and linguistic diversity of potential visitors to the games. We wanted to ensure that the website would be user-friendly and accessible to people from all around the world. This involved collaborating with language experts and cultural consultants to accurately represent the various languages and cultures on the website.

One of the main challenges we faced was the unexpected delay of the games by a year due to the global pandemic. This meant that our team had to adapt quickly and make necessary changes to the website to reflect the new dates. It was a race against time as we had to make sure that all the information on the website was up-to-date and accurate, while also keeping in mind the ever-evolving situation of the pandemic.

Despite the challenges, our team worked tirelessly to create a visually appealing and informative website that would serve visitors wanting to purchase hospitality tickets to the games. The website featured detailed information on the games, including the schedule, venues, ticketing, and transportation. We also included a section on Japanese culture, highlighting the country’s unique customs and traditions, to help visitors better understand and appreciate their experience.

As we were nearing the launch date we received the unfortunate news the games were going to be delayed by a year due to the global pandemic.  In the end the website was not used due to the unprecedented decision to hold the games behind closed doors.

In conclusion, building the multilingual Tokyo 2020 hospitality website was a challenging yet fulfilling experience. Despite the unexpected delay and  disappointing change in circumstances, our team worked tirelessly to create a website that would have enhanced the overall experience for visitors to the games. While it was not utilised, we are proud of the website we created and the opportunity to showcase Japan’s warm hospitality to the world.

Marking up our proof file with your changes

Marking up our proof file with your changes

With the free Adobe Acrobat reader (that you can download here) you’ll have all the tools you need to markup any changes on the pdf file proofs we send to you

This is very simple to do and much quicker and accurate than describing your amendments in a Word file or writing them on a print out.

Collecting colleagues amends

The quickest method to get everyones comments back a soon as possible is to email each person a copy of the PDF file we sent to you using your email client (Outlook, Mac Mail etc). DO NOT use the share tools within Acrobat as this deactivates some of the comment tools for whom you are sharing with and makes the comments marked as complete disappear.

Do not use the Acrobat share tools banner

Once you receive the commented versions back from your colleagues, save them to your computer and open the version with just your comments.

Import data field screenshot

With the comments panel open (click the double speech bubble icon) select the three dots icon. Choose the Import Data File option from the dropdown and then choose your colleagues commented file. This will add your colleagues comments to your file. Repeat the process to import comments from other files.

Making general comments and repeating changes

General comment menu

How to make a general comment

To indicate a general style change or comment on an image select the Add a comment option. This places a sticky note wherever you place it to add your comment. Please don't use this option to indicate text changes as these notes don't always stay in the exact position you placed them when the file is opened on a different computer.

Repeating changes
If you want to amend something that appears on multiple/every page, there's no need to indicate this each time, just make your comment on the first instance with a note to change it everywhere else too.

Marking up text changes

Inserting text menu

How to insert additional text

Select the Insert text option from the tool bar and click on the point in your copy where you want to indicate where some additional text to be placed. This will create an instance in the comment panel. If you don't see the comment panel click on the double speech bubble icon in the top right of the window.

Deleting text menu

How to delete text

The Strikethrough option can be found in the submenu of the of the 3rd tool bar item. Highlight the text you want to remove with this tool and it will insert a strikethrough. Highlighting text with the select tool (arrow) or right clicking on selected text will also bring up options for strikethrough.

Replacing text menu

How to replace text

To indicate where text should be replaced, make your selection using the Replace selected text tool and begin typing. The selected text is marked with a strikethrough, an insertion mark appears and the replacement text is added to the comment panel.

TIP  Multiple amends to a paragraph. If you have several changes to make to one paragraph it’s quicker if you replace the whole paragraph using the Replace text tool.

The first place many people go to when looking for images, whether it’s photographs or illustrations is Google

This is a great resource for reference purposes or if you’re gathering inspiration but do not use them in any of your projects, especially if your project is going to be displayed to the public as you will more than likely be infringing copyright. Most free images have conditions of use associated with them and it’s particularly difficult and time consuming to check with Google images. Instead look for websites which are dedicated image libraries.

Collage of different images

What are the different types of licenses?

Nearly all images fall into one of three license types – free to use, royalty free and rights managed.

Free to use

The popular photo sharing website flikr has thousands of free photos offered under a creative commons license (creativecommons.org). There are four variations of license available and to make life easier you can search for images under each variation. Briefly the four variations are:

Attribution
you can distribute, change the image and use it in your commercial and non commercial projects as long as you credit the owner.

Non Commercial
the same as ‘Attribution’ but you can only use it for non commercial projects.

No Derivatives
the same as ‘Attribution’ but you can’t change the appearance of the image in any way. You use it as it was supplied scaled to the size you need.

Sharealike
the same as ‘Attribution’ but you must offer the work you have created using the image under the same license terms.

Images can have one or a combination of all four variations applied to it.

There are a number of image libraries offering free downloads and each of them will have slightly different conditions of use so do check first. In general you may be asked to credit the site and have the following restrictions applied:

Royalty free

Images with a royalty free license are – on the whole – a better quality than those offered for free. You’ll pay a single fee which allows you to use them as often as you wish within the restrictions of the license and you don’t usually have to credit the image. The same restrictions apply as for the free images listed above with the exception of increased usage on print runs up to 500,000 copies. The majority of libraries will offer an extended license which allows you to use the image on items designed for resale. This could be digital items like web templates, screensavers, e-cards, powerpoint presentations or as wallpapers on cell phones. Physical items would be t-shirts, postcards, greeting cards, mugs, mousepads, posters, calendars, framed artwork to around 10,000 copies.

Rights managed

Some libraries offer their very best images through a rights managed license. The cost of using these images are calculated based on a number of specific factors which often include:

Editorial use only

Celebrities are paid thousands and in some cases millions of pounds by companies to endorse their products. Likewise, large companies invest substantial amounts to protect their brands including who is associated with them. Which is why good libraries will label images featuring celebrities or trademarks as being for editorial use only. If you’re writing an article about a celebrities latest performance or reviewing a product brand it’s perfectly fine to use their image to accompany your story. Just do not use their image when writing about your service or product without written permission.

Model and property releases

If you want to use an image to promote a product and it has a person on it you must find out if it has a model release. If it hasn’t or it’s not clear, choose another image. For some buildings and landmarks you even need a property release. If in doubt, please check.

Scanning for unauthorised usage

Rights holders send copies of their libraries to specialised companies who use advanced image recognition technology to scan the web for sites where their images have been used. If there is no license a solicitor will look to claim the fee along with a penalty fine which can be around 10 times the cost of the original license.

Even if you only used an image on a short run of printed leaflets or a blog for a small club, you still need to make sure you have the rights to use it.

The easiest solution is to commission Good Impressions to create your project for you. We have an ever growing library of over 180 million images which are free to use on projects we design. And should you require very specific imagery we can negotiate great deals with rights managed images or organise a complete photo shoot.

Supplying content

Supplying content

How you supply text, imagery and data to us can effect the production time enormously and if not done correctly, can increase the cost of your project

We have listed a few guidelines below which will ensure your project is completed in a timely fashion and to the price we quote. This will make the whole creative process a pleasant and productive experience all round.

If you’re writing the content for your project yourself please ensure that everyone who needs to see it, has seen and approved the copy before forwarding it on to us. There’s no quick way to merge the amended sections of a Word document and apply them to our working document, this often becomes a time consuming process leading to additional charges.

Don’t attempt to create a layout within your Word file as this is removed when it’s imported into our working document. Keep the formatting simple without colour and set to a single column.  Do indicate what should be headers, body copy and bullet points etc. and do insert specific images you may have next to the text it relates to. We will require these images sent separately too.

Don’t forgot – run your text document through a spelling and grammar checker.

Before we even talk about resolution you need to be sure you have the rights to use the images you’re supplying. If you haven’t done so already read our guide on image copyright here.

For photographs, the best file type for retaining image quality is the RAW format. If this is not an option then an uncompressed TIFF and finally a JPG file set to maximum quality is the preference.

Photographs to be printed in documents should have a resolution of 300ppi or more at the size it’s to be printed in the document. The resolution for large format printing (banners and displays) is lower at 85ppi at the final printed size. The lowest file size is for online uses at 72ppi at the size it’s to be used.

Graphic images like logos and flat colour illustrations are best supplied in a vector format. Unlike photographs, vector graphics can be scaled to any size without losing image quality. There are many file types that support the vector format with the most common ones being EPS, AI, PDF and SVG.

Supplying Data
Because data usage can be so varied and complex the best approach is to decide which data fields you would like to include, we will then take a sample and flow it into the layout and apply styles. Once you are happy with the sample layout we will create a template for you to supply the remaining data.

Many organisations work with much more data than they intent to use in the projects we create for them. When this is the case please make sure the file that is sent to us only contains the information thats meant to go into the project. Redundant data can cause import issues and create confusion which usually leads to mistakes occurring.

However, if the leaflet is used for any of the following purposes it will attract VAT.

For full details of what printed matter is zero rated go to the HMRC website.

VAT free advertising and goods associated with donations for charities

Your charity can advertise VAT-free in any medium that communicates with the public, such as a newspaper or television, providing the advert is placed on someone else’s time or space. This means that if someone charges your charity for an advert, for example in their magazine or on a radio programme or for displaying a poster on their premises, they don’t have to charge you VAT.

The VAT relief does not cover costs for advertising in your own media – for example in your charity’s own magazine, on your own website, or on your own T-shirts etc.

Adverts qualifying for the relief can be on any subject, including staff recruitment. Charities can also purchase pre-printed collecting boxes, envelopes and appeal letters at the zero rate.

Low cost lapel stickers, emblems and badges that you might give as an acknowledgment of a donation can also be supplied to you at the zero rate. Find out more in VAT Notice 701/58 below.

If we produce a package of printed material for your charity, some of which is zero-rated and some of which is standard-rated, we may be able to zero rate the entire package. This is known as the ‘package test’. Find out more by following the link at the end of this section

Design and Print Process

Design and Print Process

This guide will take you step by step through the various stages of the design and print process and outline both of our roles and responsibilities in order to achieve your goals. It also contains some things you should know to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible, on time and how to avoid any extra charges.

TIP  Start as early as possible. Occasionally, unforeseen issues beyond our control can occur which will affect the schedule of your project. These are things like print machine break-downs and delivery issues. Thankfully these can easily be avoided by starting early and allowing some extra time to the production of your project, especially if it’s required for an event. It’s less stressful for everyone and in some circumstances printers will offer preferential rates for longer turnaround times. It’s annoying if your project is delayed but never a problem if it arrives early.

The process begins with you supplying a brief detailing your requirements to us. If you don't know where to start you can complete our online briefing form which will prompt you for all the answers we need from you to work out a quote. We'll check your brief and if necessary contact you to clarify or make suggestions to either enhance or make your project more cost effective.

Next, you will receive a detailed quote from us by email with a breakdown of all costs and a provisional schedule. Quite often we are asked for optional prices for things like laminating or various print quantities, which may not end up being part of your final order. It's for this reason that our quotes are broken down and we ask you to add up the parts you require to calculate the total cost.

If your organisation operates a purchase ordering system we would require your official order prior to work commencing. Otherwise you can simply send us an email confirming you are happy for us to proceed as quoted. Please list the parts you require if more options were quoted.

Due to some of our services attracting VAT and others being zero rated, our quotes DO NOT include VAT.

Once our quote has been approved we would then require you to supply the text along with all the imagery you have including logos which you would like to appear in the project.

Supplying Text

Supplying Images
Before we even talk about resolution you need to be sure you have the rights to use the images you’re supplying. If you haven’t done so already read our guide on image copyright here.

For photographs, the best file type for retaining image quality is the RAW format. If this is not an option then an uncompressed TIFF and finally a JPG file set to maximum quality is the preference.

When this is the case please make sure the file that is sent to us only contains the information thats meant to go into the project. Redundant data can cause import issues and create confusion which usually leads to mistakes occurring.

When we send you a proof it will arrive by email and be a pdf file (except for websites) with a range of tools activated so you can indicate where and how you would like changes to be made. You'll need the free Adobe Acrobat reader to view this file. If you don't already have it you can download it from the Adobe website. It's really easy to mark-up your amendments as you only need to use a few of the tools. Read our quick guide.

You will notice our proof files will have numbered labels like [V1] or [V2]. These indicate which number proof you are viewing.  There are two opportunities for you to make amendments built into our quotes, therefore sign off should be achieved at [V3]. If the number of amendments go past this stage there may be additional charges. We will advise beforehand. Once you approve the design we'll send you a final file for your reference without the tools activated. This will be optimised for you to upload to your website should you wish.

What is an amendment?
Amendments can be made to the text and imagery. Should more than 20% of the text on a page be changed or the requested amendments cause the text to flow over to the next page it will be considered as adjusting the layout and additional costs will be incurred. You will be advised how much these costs are and we will require you to confirm acceptance via email prior to the amendments being carried out.

If your project is to be printed we will prepare the files as per the specifications of our quote. We can arrange for paper samples to be posted out to you but this can take a several days so please advise us from the start. Once the printing has been completed it will be delivered or distributed as requested.

In the unlikely event that there is a problem with the final printed item, you MUST inform us within 48hrs of delivery.

There are projects like website development and digital presentations where the process will vary slightly, mainly in the method of proofing.  You will be advised at the time.

Folding formats

Folding formats

There are a number of different ways to fold paper that create interesting formats and get your information noticed.

Some are quite complex and carry the same amount of content as a small brochure. In the past these complex folds were predominately used for maps and instructions that have to fit into a small box. Now with the trending of infographics we are creating summary reports with traditional style leaflet content on one side of the sheet and a poster with graphical key points on the other. If you are thinking of introducing a different type of fold to your next project we can help you plan out your content to work effectively.

Lorem Ipsum thumbnail

Lorem Ipsum what?

Lorem Ipsum what?

You may have already or possibly will do in the near future, receive a proof from us which contains text that appears to be in a foreign language

This is dummy text referred to as Lorem Ipsum which designers use as a placeholder to represent actual content. Lorem Ipsum is sections taken from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a 1st-century BC Latin text by Cicero. It’s considered to be better to use Lorem Ipsum as placeholder text rather than generic paragraphs of English, as you are not distracted from reading the content which has no relevance to the project and can therefore focus on the overall layout.

Lorem Ipsum has been used in the industry as placeholder text since the 1500s and was made more accessible by Letraset in the 1960s when they introduced sheets of Lorem Ipsum to their dry rub transfer collection. Nowadays all professional desktop publishing software generates placeholder text from within the program.

For anyone interested we have inserted several paragraphs below.

Binding Types thumbnail

Binding Options

Binding Options

Depending on the number of pages in your document, there can be several options available to you for binding it together

We have illustrated the most common types below along with an approximate page number range suitable for the type of binding. Some bindings have particular features like the loop stitch which is designed to allow documents to be read whilst inside a ring binder and the screw bound makes it easy to add or remove pages. The stab stitched, tape bound and comb bound are for the domain of large internal reports as the finish is not as aesthetically pleasing on the eye as the others. This leaves saddle stitched, perfect bound, spiral bound (also know as coil binding) and wire bound being the staple for most professionally produced documents.

Paper sizes

Paper sizes

The industry standard for paper sizes in the UK and most of the world is called the A series. Of the developed countries only North America, Canada and parts of Mexico have chosen not to adopt this standard.

The smallest size in the scale is referred to as A10 with the largest being 4A0. You’ll notice from the diagram that the next size up is two of the current size placed together along the long edge. This makes it easier to remember the actual measurements too, as each size will contain one of the dimensions of the next size up or down. The majority of projects we work on would fall within the range of A6 for items like postcards to A1 for posters and folders.

Paper sizes chart

Items that don't conform to these standards.

Business cards
Prior to the introduction of the credit card to the UK in 1966, business cards were produced in a variety of sizes. Since then the 85mm x 55mm dimension of the credit card has become the unofficial standard for business cards, especially as all wallets and purses are now produced to accommodate this size.

Compliment slips
Often produced in A6, the compliment slip is more commonly printed to the DL (Dimension Lengthwise) size. The DL size was originally defined for envelopes to hold an A4 letterhead folded into three equal panels. The DL sheet size is 99mm x 210mm.

Newspapers
You only have to browse the shelves of your local newsagent to realise the variety of sizes that newspaper are produce in, with the most common being broadsheet and tabloid. Broadsheet is 600 x 750 mm and Tabloid is 280 x 430 mm.

Proud of You Campaign

The standard of education in the borough of Waltham Forest had once again improved and we were asked to create an awareness campaign to highlight the council’s commitment to support and invest in schools to continually improve them.

A group of students with particular success stories were chosen to lead the campaign. They were photographed and placed within the word ‘proud’ to portray the council’s support playing an integral part of the increased success.

A second phase of the campaign was developed from teachers perspectives telling their success stories from the classroom.

When designing a folder for Rubicon Estates the key requirements were to show they are based in Limehouse, it had to be a little unusual and have something of a wow factor.

We briefed a photographer to take lots of images of local interest which we ran across the front and back cover so anyone who knew Limehouse would instantly be familiar. The corner of the cover was die cut to reflect their logo and be a little unusual and the wow factor came from a photograph of Limehouse basin which was taken in three sections, stitched together and printed across the whole inside of the folder to make one stunning panoramic.

Waltham Forest wanted to promote the major transformation of the four key libraries in the borough to multimedia centres and encourage more residents to use these new facilities.

We created a completely new brand reflecting the modernisation which encompassed logo development, font usage, a colour palette and graphic approach. Showing off to the trade

We have worked with Locata Housing Service for a number of years and first created their brand over ten years ago.

Since then Locata has grown into the largest provider of housing options in England working with 78 local authorities and over 200 housing bodies.

Whilst still fulfilling their original business of choice based lettings systems, their services have expanded greatly to include a whole suite of web-based products that provide the backbone for the housing options services their clients deliver.

To coincide with an upcoming trade show, Locata wanted to review their logo and create a new suite of marketing materials.

The logo needed to reflect their online expansion and include a sub-brand for their popular Exchange Locata service. This was rolled-out to stationery, a set of brochures with slip case, exhibition panels, roller-banners and advertising.

Their key requirements were to ensure the site informs when they were established, to make people want to read what can be a dull subject and finally, appear visually different from their competitors.

The new responsive website we created is very image led with the information broken down into sections to make it interesting and easier to absorb. Laurie Cunningham Statue

Laurie Cunningham Statue

All football fans will remember the name Laurie Cunningham, the first black player to represent England at any level.

He was to win a total of six caps for England and was first British player to transfer to Real Madrid. He died in 1989 in Spain, tragically early in his illustrious career. Leyton Orient and Waltham Forest council are commemorating Laurie Cunningham’s years at Brisbane Road by launching a fund raising campaign to commission a statue by noted sculptor Graham Ibbeson, famed for his statues of sporting figures such as Don Revie, Fred Truman and Dickie Bird as well as his iconic Eric Morecombe. We were honoured to be asked to design the campaign material and attend the campaign launch at Leyton Orient grounds.

We are pleased to announce the target for fundraising was met and the majestic 2.2m high statue was unveiled outside the Leyton Orient stadium in November 2017.

Chadney Bulgin

Chadney Bulgin

Top 100 chartered financial planners Chadney Bulgin approached us looking to build on their brand.

After a recent redesign of their logo and stationery Chadney Bulgin commissioned us to evolve their brand and create a suite of promotional leaflets as well as redesigning their website. They particularly wanted to promote a look and feel that, whilst having the gravitas of an established business, should be more contemporary and approachable. To achieve this the cover of the leaflets adopt a classic structure with an unimposing san serif font for the title, combined with a golden filter applied to the feature images adds just a touch of prestige.

Chadney Bulgin realised from their previous website that they didn’t have the tools to engage with their clients or attract new ones. Now they have a form to capture new sign-ups and to whom, along with existing clients, they now send out regular email newsletters. They have also built-up an impressive resource centre on the site which contains a mixture of news, fact sheets and business advice to keep their clients updated.

In 2015 Waltham Forest was successful in its bid for £30m to fund a Mini Holland cycling programme.

The funds received from the Transport for London tender were to radically improve the borough’s cycling infrastructure and support a step change in the number of local people choosing to cycle. The council expanded the brief to include Cycle Waltham Forest, Walk Waltham Forest and Enjoy Waltham Forest under the Mini Holland umbrella.

We were commissioned to design a brand to encompass all three aspects which would initially be used on a direct mail campaign going out to all residents in the borough. Subsequently, the campaign widened to feature publicity materials for numerous events including outdoor advertising and branded merchandise.

CTV Outside Broadcast

CTV Outside Broadcast

We were delighted to be asked to redesign CTV Outside Broadcast website.

CTV are one of the worlds leading outside broadcast companies, they work on renowned events around the globe such as the Olympics, the Ryder Cup and the Brit Awards to name a few. It had been some time since their website was reviewed and was looking tired and outdated.

Keeping to their existing brand, they wanted to the new site to reflect their positioning within the market and present the technical details for their fleet of vehicles in a more digestible format. The new site is engaging with a greater emphasis towards their social media and as it’s now responsive their SEO has improved too.

CTV have now merged with Telegenic to form EMG UK.

Quality of Life

Quality of Life

In response to the socio-economic changes and the increased number of events happening in the borough it was felt that residents should be reminded of the wide range of work carried out by Waltham Forest council.

To achieve this we created a campaign which highlights the councils role of maintaining street lighting, bin collections, street cleaning and all the other essential services residents expect, as well as it laying on free concerts, providing award winning galleries and free parks which are often taken for granted.

This campaign consisted of a suite of posters displayed on bus shelters and in the council’s newspaper to promote awareness. It culminated in the design and production of a what’s on guide to events last summer entitled Enjoy Life, more than just services to highlight all the improvements and services the council provides.

Adult College Prospectus

Adult College Prospectus

We’ve been working with the college helping them to produce their prospectus for over 20 years now.

This year we were tasked to come up with a design that conceptually portrayed the students progression and to make the prospectus stand out from the mass of other publications issued at the same time each year.

A dandelion made the perfect metaphor for the cover – the students learn together and when they complete the course they disperse and each apply their knowledge in pastures new. Creating a simple silhouette of the dandelion using only three striking colours produced just the distinctive look the client was hoping for.

The document was printed on uncoated stock to give a more tactile experience and this year was accompanied with an online page turner. The online version allows the viewer to browse the same as the physical version but also perform a search and print sections as required.

Child Sexual Exploitation thumbnail

Child Sexual Exploitation

Child Sexual Exploitation

With the all the recent tragic examples of child sexual exploitation cases in the news the council felt that an awareness campaign was needed to highlight the danger signs.

The campaign targets two specific audiences: The first is the victims themselves who are potentially unaware they are being abused along with parents, relatives and friends. Various scenarios are presented to them to help identify possible exploitation and encourage them to call Childline should they have any concerns.

Equally as important is the second target audience who are members of the public in jobs such as mini cab drivers or hotel workers who may come in to contact with potential victims of exploitation. The message highlights key indicators and urges them to ‘Say something if you see something’. Both strands of the campaign proved to be so successful that other London boroughs have asked for permission to adopt it.

Waltham Forest London Magazine

Waltham Forest London Magazine

Waltham Forest has fast become a desirable area for young professionals to move to and the council felt the time was right to promote the borough’s many positive aspects.

They decided to produce a quarterly magazine and deliver it to all residents and make it available at various outlets throughout the borough. The magazine provides a window into what life is like living and working in Waltham Forest. It highlights improvements the council is making in the borough and showcases the many interesting new artisan shops, bars and restaurants opened in the area.

We created a magazine with a contemporary, upmarket appearance containing features, interviews, business case studies and events.

Get Together thumbnail

A very social brand

A very social brand

Waltham Forest traditionally holds a series of family entertainment events throughout the year and wanted to align them as a linked program of events under the umbrella title of ‘Get Together’.

We created the over arching ‘Get Together’ brand first which used a series of concentrated dots positioned to express the concept of coming together. Individual identities were then created for each event to work harmoniously with the parent brand. The project was rolled out across printed, online and outdoor media.

Coventry Prospectus

We were pleased to win the design and print tender for Coventry council and one of the projects we’ve worked on is the CHOICE Prospectus.

The Adult Education Service in Coventry offers a choice of courses in a wide range of subjects, has venues across the city and produces a 44 page publication with 130,000 printed and distributed to residents.

The council wanted the prospectus to appeal to all age groups, look welcoming and inclusive. We achieved this by designing a pictorial cover that shows the diversity of CHOICE learners.

We also produced it as an interactive course finder that users can look for a course on a particular subject, browse courses at specific venues and browse courses in one of the three Adult Education Service districts online.

Plastic Fantastic

Plastic Fantastic

Due to the ongoing success of the previous recycling campaign we created for the London Borough of Waltham Forest the council decided to expand the campaign to include a range of other materials, including a number of plastics previously excluded.

Working with the council communications team we felt that the best way to show the range of items now included was to create a suite of illustrations that could be used over all the elements of the campaign from billboards, press ads, flyers and an information pack that has been distributed to every household in the borough.

The final design was both eye catching and informative across all communication channels, a successful outcome to quite a complicated brief.

The Royal Duchess

The Royal Duchess

A slice of modern east end life at the Broadway theatre

The Broadway Theatre was staging the play The Royal Duchess Superstore which tells the story of Terry, recently returned to East London following a long stretch in prison, highlighting the changes that have taken place in his local area and Terry’s struggles to cope with his new environment, typified by the fate of his favourite pub, the Royal Duchess, which has become a corner shop.

We were asked to design a typographic title that captured the conflict between the old and new east end. We achieved this by the superimposition of the neon sign on the classic Victorian pub lettering to show how handcrafted signage is now superseded by contemporary technology.

New look News

Waltham Forest Council commissioned us to redesign their fortnightly newspaper Waltham Forest News and re-work the layout structure to accommodate a greater number of shorter articles.

With a circulation of 115,000 copies distributed to every household in the borough the paper is widely read and so it was important to keep it identifiable to its regular readers. We created a fresh contemporary look to the paper without radically changing its identity and reinforced the style with comprehensive guidelines and a template with pre-styled layout elements.

To celebrate the Olympic games coming to London again Tower Bridge Exhibition wanted to put on an exhibition in the West walkway to pay tribute the various cities that have held the games and highlight a few key stand-out moments.

We were very please to win the tender to design and produce the 30 panels which are on show from 2nd May to the end of the year. The images are from a mixture of royalty free and rights managed sources with the majority of the historic ones coming from Getty Images. The main focus of each panel was the host city and the brief also asked for a vibrancy of colour to reflect the rings and the dynamic energy of the competition to be brought into the design. We also arranged the content to be translated into 5 languages and incorporated them into the layout.
